Redecorate Your Room for Free!

I really wanted to redo my room and have it feel more bohemian and vintage, I still do. But for now, I have to use what I already have to spice it up a little. I think decorating your room is a way to express your style and show your personality, but sometimes it gets a little expensive. That’s why I’m going to show you what I’ve done to give you some ideas for your own room.
stand

In this corner of my room, I have a diy necklace hanger, some nail polish, and a stand with all my lotions and jewelry. The necklace hanger I made with some cardboard, purple fabric, ribbon, and push pins. I just picked out some nail polish that looked pretty for this season and put them in the top of a small box. And finally the stand, which is my favorite piece of furniture in my whole room, I grabbed from the Goodwill drop-off for free. I need to keep all my jewelry out on display or else I forget about them and don’t wear any, so that’s why I put them up there.

This is one corner of my dresser. The shells in the short, squarish box are from a park in India, and the other small container has two necklaces that I never wear. The tall plastic cup in the back just has some paper cranes my friend gave me and a plush keychain that I also got from a friend.

And finally, this is the other side of my dresser. TheΒ mason jar full of jellybeans from Harry Potter World in Universal Studios Florida, and the jar itself used to have homemade apple sauce in it. The cup is also from Universal and is filled with the same paper cranes as the other cup. On top of the mason jar is a picture of me and one of my best friends inside a frame I made in school. In the back is a book I got at a temple in Texas.

Well that’s all folks! If I get a new addition to my room I might update this post, and I may also do a tutorial on the necklace holder, even though it’s super simple.

Thanks for reading I hope you enjoyed! It would mean a lot to me if you liked my page on Facebook or liked this post down below. Until next time, bye!

Personalize Your Spiral Bound Planner

So a few days ago I got a new planner, but it was missing a few things that I felt were important, so I decided to add them myself.

IMG_1640.JPG

I found out about Filofaxes on youtube and fell in love with them, but couldn’t justify spending 50 plus dollars on a planner. I was watching some (okay maybe a lot) of videos on how to organize them and it sparked the idea of trying to personalize my planner.

First I’ll show you how you can make these dividers to put in your planner if you want more organization or if you want to add more sections.

IMG_1636.JPG

1. Measure the size of the pages in the planner
Mine were 3 3/8 in x 6 1/8 in.

2. Draw it and cut it out
I used colored 5×8 index cards that I already had, but you can use anything that’s a little sturdy. For the tabs I just traced the already existing tabs inside the planner so they didn’t stick out and get crushed.

IMG_1630.JPG

3. Measure the holes
Now you will need to measure the holes that the rings go through. If you have a hole punch you can just measure where to place the holes and punch. If you don’t have a hole punch, make a template like the one below.

IMG_1631.JPG

4. Cut out the holes
If you have a hole puncher then this is the time to use it. If not mark where the holes will go, trace the template you made and cut it out. Then cut from the edge of the paper to the hole so you can slip it into the spiral rings. The easiest way would be to use an Exacto knife but i couldn’t find mine so I just used scissors. Just slip it into the rings and voila you have yourself some dividers!

I used white paper to cover up the week pages and use them to put sticky notes on or write on directly. You could also use this tutorial and leave out the tabs to make extra pages for notes or to do’s or anything you want really.

I also made a smaller version of the dividers but used it to hold sticky notes. The small white paper on the back of the cover just has some to do’s on it.

I haven’t figured out if this is the exact way I want it yet so if it changes in the future I may do an updated post on how it’s changed.

School Essentials and Tips on Staying Organized

These essentials are not necessarily universal, they are just what have worked for me. By no means am I saying you have to buy these things to have a good, organized school year, they just help me stay organized. (This post is geared towards middle schoolers, but I think it can be applied to most grade levels.)

β€’Backpack (duh!) – Just make sure you get a nice sturdy one that can hold all your supplies, I use and recommend Jansport backpacks

β€’Pencil Pouch/Box – I love buying cute ones and have a small collection of them. I don’t know why but I find great joy in pencil pouches. πŸ˜‚

20140804-040920 pm-58160012.jpg
β€’Pencils and Pens – I only use mechanical pencils because I hate having to get up in the middle of class to sharpen my pencil or having my led break all the time. And I always have black and blue pens just in case a teacher has a preference on what color they want you to write in. I also like to carry a few colorful pens to write in my planner with.

20140804-041354 pm-58434757.jpg
β€’Binder – It’s a pretty basic necessity but try and find one with the rings attached to the back and not the spine so that the papers don’t shift and wrinkle when you open and close it. The size of the binder is your personal choice, but I have found that I don’t need more than a 1 inch binder, I’ll explain why later.

β€’Dividers – Binder dividers are like the holy grail of school supplies. I especially like the ones with the pockets. They keep me so organized and are easy to use too, which I think is key to organization. If organization is difficult or time consuming no one, or at least I, wouldn’t enjoy doing it, especially when I’m packing up to race to my next class.

β€’Planner – If your school doesn’t provide you with a planner, PLEASE go and get one for yourself. It is so easy to think, “Oh I’ll just remember all my homework, I don’t need a planner,” but then forget to do something or not remember a deadline. Writing in a planner is easy and makes sure you don’t forget anything. Which for me is important because I tend to forget things, a lot. 20140804-041851 pm-58731985.jpg
β€’Miscellaneous – Some other school supplies I think are important is a highlighter, a good eraser, some paper clips, a glue stick, and a six inch ruler.

The next part of the list is what I think you should keep in your gym locker or your backpack, depending on what you prefer.

β€’DEODORANT – Trust me, no one likes to smell, or smell like, sweaty pits. So put one in your locker, and put it on after gym class.

β€’Perfume/Body Spray – Girls if you want to smell a little sweet then bring some perfume or body spray to put on after deoderant.

20140804-042125 pm-58885117.jpg
β€’Hairbrush – To fix up your hair a little after running.

20140804-042236 pm-58956991.jpg
β€’Athletic Shoes – I would recommend leaving a pair of athletic shoes in your locker so your always prepared and don’t have to lug them to school everyday.

20140804-042316 pm-58996419.jpg
β€’Extra Pair of Socks – In case you wear flip flops or sandals to school and need to change into your running shoes.

Ok well that pretty much sums up most everything you’ll need for middle school, now let’s get onto how I stay organized and how you can too.

First, a planner is an amazing organizational tool. Everyday, remember to write down every assignment you have to finish. If you have projects due on a certain day, write it on the month page. After you finish that particular assignment, put a check by it or cross it out. This will give you a sense of accomplishment and make you want to be more productive, at least that’s what happens when I do it. Something else I like to do is write each subject’s assignment in a different color because I am a visual learner, and because it looks pretty. πŸ˜„

Second, DO NOT STUFF THINGS IN YOUR BINDER! There is a reason it has three rings and a reason why teachers hole punch your papers (most of the time). Seriously, If you stuff things haphazardly into your binder, they will get sucked into a black hole at the bottom of your backpack and will never be seen again. Put papers in the rings, and use dividers for different subjects. I like to only carry one binder with all my subjects in it because our school doesn’t have lockers. I can do that in a one inch binder because I put papers that I may need later but not right then in an accordion folder at home, and I regularly clean out my binder and throw away unnecessary papers.

And lastly, do your homework in a quite, and clean place. By clean I mean that if you have a desk where you do all your work, clear off the top, don’t leave it cluttered with papers because otherwise another black hole will open up there and we don’t want that to happen, right?
